In my most recent photo shoot, my group and I were experimenting with lighting and flash. The first photography instrument we had used was the flash that attaches to the top of the camera. It can also be hand held but we chose to attach it to the top. We then went to different parts of the inside of the school that wasn't too brightly lit so the flash would actually have an affect. We also took into consideration the background, since the inside of the school is mostly a brown and red brick wall. We went around looking for things such as posters or bulletin boards that would make a good background that also had decent lighting. Once we found that spot, we started to experiment with the flash. It was just like learning the controls of the camera all over again, because the light couldn't be too high or too low. My teacher told us to start with -2/3, so that's what we did, and from there, we set the flash higher or lower, depending on how the exposure looked on the camera. Speaking of the camera, we also had to adjust it's settings to deal with the flash every time we changed it. The next place we shot was in the staircase, so that the background would be the stairs out of focus going up or down.

After we were done shooting around the school, we went back inside to the photography room and looked for places to shoot with the light stick in the studio. The great thing about the studio is that it is dimly lit, so the light stick looked pretty good in the picture. My favorite pictures from this photo shoot are of my friend Catherine in front of this two canvas painting of some mountains. I love how the light stick with the warm shade on top of it made the orange and blues of the painting pop. I also like the affect of her dark and black shirt on top of this lighter colored painting. You can guess that I took a bunch of pictures in front of this painting, and will be doing more in the future. I also took some pictures of my friend Lauren in the living room set up in this green chair with pink stripes. Those didn't come out as well as I wanted them too, because her shirt was also green and the wall was blue, so things clashed a lot. Lastly, I took pictures of my friend Catherine again in front of an black back drop. I love those pictures almost as much as the ones with the mountains in the background. I wish I had more time to experiment in front of it, like make the light stick show up in her eyes and play with shadows on her face, but there was only couple minutes left and I wanted to get the assignment done. Even though this assignment is over, I want to play with lighting and back drops a lot more.
