Violence in the World Today

I do think that there is way to much violence in the world, and the media has been playing a big part in it, good and bad.

The Good:

I feel that photography and movies bring a lot of awareness to violence in the world. For example, the movie American Sniper. It showed people the trauma and violence that people in the force, in this case a U.S. Navy Seal have to witness and participate in and the aftermath they go through. Also, in real life, the photos in magazines like National Geographic and TIME magazine make people aware of what's going on in different places around the world like third world countries and even here in America. The pictures are documentation that help people realize how much violence and crime happens every single day. Things such as hate crimes, poverty, war, abuse and senseless acts of violence are magnified through photojournalism. It brings attention to the problems going on in the world, by not just saying it, but seeing the actual proof. And as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words

The Bad:

There are so many downsides to violence being portrayed in the media, especially in movies, tv shows and video games. In some ways, the ability to access violent films and pictures is way too easy. It's dangerous and scary how easily accesible these situations can be found. Kids can simply go onto google and find such vulgar things and it can be implemented into their minds. They can turn on the tv and find a violent show or movie. Also, videogames are almost putting these violent acts into people's not just children's minds. People are also becoming more desensitized to violence because it's seen so much in the media, especially in action movies where people are killing other people with no remorse and things are blowing up every two seconds. It makes violence look so normal, like it's not a big deal, and even though it's "just a movie", I do think it plays a lot into violence today. Society is also becoming less cautious on what should and shouldn't be shown. Even crime shows are getting so in depth on murder and crimes that it can give people ideas. There's a show called "Autopsy" which goes in detail on different murder crimes and where the murderer went wrong. Someone can take that and information and figure out in their head on how to create the perfect murder without even knowing what they're doing, which I think is the frightening part. There's even a show called "How to Get Away with Murder". It can't get more blunt than that.

There are so many pros and cons to violence in the media. It brings awareness to certain issues, but it can also give so much information that people can take it and commit their own crimes. I think it depends on the person who is exposed to these things and what they choose to do with that information.
