Appearance vs. Personality

Appearance VS. Personality:

Different photographers have different preferences. Some only want their model to have a beautiful face. But, other photographers like a lot of personality. But I personally would choose personality over appearance (as cliche as it is). This is because I feel like if your model has a lot of personality, it communicates through the camera. A model can be absolutely beautiful but have no expression or energy and that can transfer into the photo. But a fun person is comfortable going outside of the box and do funny facial expressions and poses, making it a really fun picture. I think a picture with a lot of personality is more interesting and tops what is deemed "beautiful" by today's standards.

I think that people who prefer appearance over personality feel this way becuase of society's obsession with outer beauty and looks. And it is true that some people look for beauty in photography. But, I think that the world is starting to evolve, slowly but surely. More people are starting to look for more quirky things rather than beautiful. I know that I would rather have something uncommon because having something one of a kind would be more special, something that doesn't look like everything else. I would transfer that into the pictures I take. I want to take photos of things that people wouldn't think of.

I also feel like things or people that are catogorized as "beautiful" look the same becuase they are all in this set box of what they need to look like. All of their features looks the same. But the things that don't fit the social norm and are outside of the set box are so broad and different. They can be the things that are the most interesting to look at. It is unfortunate that the people and things that are different aren't considered beautiful, but I think the uniqueness that these people possess is a lot more special.

A balance of both personality and appearance can also be beneficial. The beauty of a person can capture the attention of many and then the personality of the person in the picture can attract another group of people. Also, personality can make people look at the picture longer.

Working with a person with a fun personality would also be a lot more enjoyable. If you have a model who is all about they're looks, it might not be fun because that's all their worried about. But, having a funny and sociable model can make work seem less tiring and redundant. Also, looking at the same type of face can be quite boring to the photographer and even to the buyer. People want to see something different not something they've already seen for years and years. So it's important to show variety in the subjects of your pictures, whether it be a person or if you're a nature photographer or any type of photographer. You need to have a unique perspective and that requires having unique looking models or subject.
